Penns Grove business owners air concerns about downtown police presence | Salem County - - NJ.com
“How many tickets have been issued, if we are having the same problems,” asked Mincey. “As a parent and grandparent I know they (the children) wouldn’t keep spending my money. So if they kept getting tickets I would either keep them in the house or they would have to pay them themselves. Either way, they would start to act right.” ![]() Obviously the parents of said teens don't give a crap if their kids are roaming the streets like a pack of wild dogs and are destroying the neighborhoods. I highly doubt the tickets issued are getting paid by the parents and the idea of the 'bad' teens paying them is laughable. They don't care what they do and they won't be held accountable for their actions because they've been told that it's not their fault they live in a poor area. These people need to learn that being poor doesn't mean you have to live like an animal. Have some respect for yourself and the area you live in. Penns Grove Pride in Progress? Yeah...right. I haven't seen it. All I've seen is PG going down hill and dragging the surrounding region with them like an expanding sinkhole.

The town is looking real bad. The crowds are getting out of control especially at the chinese restaurant. I can see why the riverwalk is a dead issue. No investor will ever invest in a property where you have to drive through what resembles a lawless section of the Bronx. The only solution is to constantly break up the crowds instead of letting them stare you down as you drive by.

I suppose nobody remembers when Giuliani first became mayor of New York City. One of the first things he did was to clamp down on graffiti, get rid of the "window washers" and arrest people for the smallest infractions. Liberals criticized him for violating people's rights. But within a year or two New York became one of the cleanest and safest cities in the nation. Their economy started growing, because businesses were more willing to invest in a safe, clean city. People started walking through Central Park again. Times Square changed from a dirty, disgusting slum into something that is dazzling and exciting again.
How quickly our leaders forget what really works!

Penns Grove is lost......The state needs to take over Penns Grove and the SAG needs to look into every aspect of city government and lock up a few of those who have sit by and watched this town die. Fire the whole police dept. for failure to enforce the rule of law and replace it with new officers under the leadership of the state police. Take over all vacent buildings with the slighest code violations or tax arrears and tear them down. Fine or send to prison any landlord who will not bring his property up to code within a month of being notified. Forget the nonsense of the River Walk until the rest of the town is cleaned up. Tow away all unregistered vehicles and those registered by local residents in another state. Make the town a place where only honest people feel welcome by using the "stop and frisk" law. ( The SC ruled in 1968 that stop and frisk is legal)...Enforce every quality of life law to the max. Make the town a place for lawbreakers to avoid. STOP BEING AFRAID TO PISS SOME SEGMENTS OF THE POPULATION OFF!!!

Keep in mind that those police officers have a Chief and Council members to answer too.
Do not blame everything that does not happen on the police force. They do the best that they can under the circumstances. |

It's well known that I'm pro cop and have a bias toward our patrol officers. Having said that, I take issue with the patrol officers taking the heat for things they really can't control. It's the same on your job as theirs. Your job description doesn't say cleaning the toilets is a part of your job and yet your boss tells you to do just that, then what are you going to do? Pretty much clean the toilets right? Get the point I'm trying to make?
Why fire all the cops? The chief and council will still be in place. The police department is no better than those in the position of authority. It's not real easy to fire a chief and there are elections to replace problematic council members. So in the end it is us as taxpayers, residents, voters, that continue to allow the whole deal to fester and grow. The more we stand together, the more vocal we become, the more in charge we are. As with sprat, I am aware of some of the inner workings of what our officers deal with everyday. I don't mean with the public side of their jobs either. As much as I admire most of our officers, I wouldn't touch their job. In a perfect world our officers would go out, do their jobs, pretty much as they want to do them, without politics hindering them, without having to fear stepping on someones toes because of arresting someones friend or relative. Alas, this is Penns Grove. Change has to come from the top and that is where we come in. But, shit does too often run downhill. Try to remember this. No matter how ineffective you think our officers or our department is, these are also the men and women that will take a bullet for us, will do their best to save our lives as first responders to us and our families in medical emergencies. What we see as an officer not doing all that we think they should do, maybe they are better able to know what the law allows them to do in that situation. They may not be perfect, but, they are there.

I can still picture all of those people hanging out at the chinese takeout. You have the bar down the road that doesn't help matters also. When you have a gang of people like that, two to four officers become ineffective. Knives, bottles, guns, gang banged etc could and would happen. To be effective, PG needs to ask the state or county to help them with crowd control until the loitering stops. Asking for help is not a bad thing. We can invade Afganastan(sp) and Iraq, why not Penns Grove? Stay until the crime/crowds are intimidated.
