YOU absolutely refuse? Your mind may, but YOU refuse to do nothing...and in your mind's refusal you suffer. You can't refuse a thing...you get sick...you get injured...you get emotional...you can't refuse any of it. You can resist, but you can't refuse. Hell, you as the infant you are can't even refuse your thoughts as they control your very being.
Once you learn to control your mind rather than allowing your mind to control you...then your ways can't help but change. And no, willpower is NOT controlling your mind, it is one side of the mind controlling the other.
You would have to renounce nothing, since renouncing things is mind driven. Once you control your mind the simple idea of renouncing something seems trivial. You could then learn to accept those things you value without being so attached to them. In this acceptance you simply would not have to choose to defend those things, or see others live in them.
All of our true potential is to become worm food Piney. What I was alluding to was your true potential in those moments that occur BETWEEN NOW and the time you become worm food. You will never realize THOSE because you are too wrapped up in your mind and your attachment to its illusions. In that first nibble of maggots on your flesh, you illusions are gone, your attachments cease to be, and all the moments you wasted in diversion can never be regained. In that light, each moment is too precious to offer as a sacrifice to these illusions you have.
It's like putting a torch in a dark cave, you can't see a thing until you learn to adjust your eyes...and then the sight is amazing.
